NOTE: The first priority of the Manteno Project is the dissemination of information about the former Manteno State Hospital. There may be some confusion about the use of materials on this web site due to works in progress toward the publication of a book. Much of the information published on this site will also be included in that book and thus at some point may become copyrighted by the author or publisher.  Please keep in mind that due to these circumstances, changes may occur without prior notification.

The Manteno Project allows the use of some materials with the stipulation that credit be given to the Manteno Project. These materials may include photographs, documents, literature or artwork. No materials on this site may be used for commercial purposes, unless permission is obtained. Materials from this site used in any form must be unaltered copies, only.

Some of the material on this site was obtained from various Illinois State publications.  These materials include, but are not limited to, the photographic images in the gallery “Historical Images of Manteno State Hospital” and the annual reports from various state departments, (except as otherwise noted). These materials are readily available at various libraries and archives.

A great effort has been made to properly credit the origins of materials on this site.  Some contributed materials are credited to other persons, (anonymous or named) and collections. Many of these remain the physical or intellectual property of the Manteno Project by donation. Other contributions remain the sole property of the credited owner. These contributions are used by permission only.

The Manteno Project gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, utility or completeness of any information contained in any materials published on its web site. The user of said material assumes all responsibility and risk for the accuracy and verification of any information contained within it. The Manteno Project disclaims all warranties.

USES

The Manteno Project has outlined below some, but not all, “acceptable” and “unacceptable” uses of the materials published on its site.

Acceptable Uses

  • Scientific, academic or personal research, including genealogy.
  • Communication and exchange for academic, professional, informational or historic development.
  • Activities and publications that are in support of the the Manteno Project.
Unacceptable Uses
  • Any illegal or inappropriate use of materials, or use in support of such activities, is prohibited. Illegal use shall be defined as use which violates state, or federal law. Inappropriate use shall be defined as a violation of the goals, purpose and intended use of the material.

  • Direct, (“hotlinking”), to pull the image files from this server for use on another site.  This is considered bandwidth theft and is illegal.  Please download such materials and (preferably) cite in the manner given below.

  • Transmitting, publishing or originating any unlawful, fraudulent, or defamatory, communications where the material or its transmission or distribution, would constitute or encourage conduct that is a criminal offense or would give rise to civil liability.

  • Use of any materials or information on this site in furtherance of profit-making activities (consulting for pay, sales or distribution of commercial products or services for profit, etc.), personal monetary gain or use by for-profit companies, unless otherwise authorized by the Manteno Project.

  • Materials on this site may not be used for the slander, defamation or misrepresentation of the Manteno Project.
Real Acceptable Use Examples
 – article written by David Schuerholz on the Harold C. Piepenbrink Award and published in the ABHM’s (Association of Behavioral Healthcare Management) quarterly publication . This article used this site for background information, history and an image of Harold C. Piepenbrink, (Superintendent of Manteno State Hospital from 1967-1970).

- partial duplicate of the film “Working an Playing to Health”, provided by the Manteno Project and used by University of Chicago as a learning tool.
