JUST PUBLISHED! May 2010 DIARY OF A MEDICAL STUDENT: HOSPITAL OF HORRORS by Harvey Widroe MD CreateSpace Pub

This is a real life account of what Manteno State Hospital was like in 1956. I lived there in 1956 while I was a a University of Chicago medical student. I wrote and kept a diary of life at Manteno which became the basis for the book.

I sent a copy to the Manteno Public Library. Otherwise try Amazon.

Intriguing story. I've loved history for the longest time. It's a useful tool to understand that places used to be like and where we come from. The story of the spoons will always be a useful tool. To better understand what occupational life was like at Manteno. They're part of it's past, no matter what their importance. I've always been interested in asylums and mental hospitals. If you plan to write more about Manteno or another hospital, keep the good work comin. Great story.

How very very sad; I worked there for a year and a half at the end. Seeing this brought back some strong memories.

I think the story/life of Gennie or Genevieve Pilarski is an interesting one. It shows the kind of treatment patients received. It seems she was somewhat normal in the beginning, and from the therapies etc, she got alot worse. I think her life was tragic and sad. She could've had better, had it not been for her parents. I'm sure something else could've been done. I'm currently trying to find out as much as I can about her. I got most of everything above already, before I read it. If anyone knows where she's buried and who her parents were, can you respond? Would deeply appreciate it or any help offered.

In 1955 there was a horrible killing of 3 children in Chicago. Two of those children belonged to the Schuessler family. Anton Schuessler, Sr. the father of John and Anton, Jr., died in Dr. Julius Steinfeld's care.

"On Novermber 11, 1955, he had a heart attack while being given "Electrical Shock Treatment" for depression. He died at Forest Sanitarium and Rest Home in Des, Plaines, IL."

Got the book in this week and skimmed over it. Unfortunately there is only a couple pages that are about studies done at Manteno State Hospital. Almost all were conducted in the "sanitarium" in Des Plains, IL.
