Excerpts From Annual Reports of the Illinois Department
of Mental Health
Manteno State Hospital - July 1, 1964 - June 30, 1965
General Surgery is now done at the Little Company of
Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park and the Kankakee State
Hospital.
There has been no pathologist available for several
years and subsequently few autopsies are done. A senior
clinical director does pathological studies, along with
numerous other duties, as time permits.
Tranquilizer and anti-depressant drug use continues
on a large scale, with 3,100 to 3,300 patients constantly
receiving such drug. Their use is indispensable, Electro-convulsive
therapy is utilized in selected cases, but there has
been some reduction in its application. Insulin coma
therapy is rarely used. Hydrotherapy needs are diminishing.
This hospital has been incorporated into Zone III.
A notable change marked the end of the typhoid carrier
ward. Ever since the typhoid fever epidemic of the 1930's
a typhoid carrier ward existed at this hospital, with
not only local hospital patients but also typhoid carriers
discovered in other state mental hospitals. The few
left were dispersed to other state hospitals for individual
isolation. The space provided by this maneuver was taken
over by the geriatric project.
Plans are being developed to alter the physical structure
of Barton cottage and develop a modified school for
living.
Addams cottage was vacated of patients and will become
a patient's library, recreational lounge, classrooms
and rehabilitation area.
An all-faiths chapel is needed to provide the proper
atmosphere for religious services. For many years, the
amusement hall (Hinton) has been the site for such services.
The University of Illinois School of Social Work at
Champaign has designated this hospital for field-work
placement of their students.
The Activity Therapy Services Training School located
at this hospital continued to provide training programs
for the entire State.
