Excerpts From Annual Reports of the Illinois Department
of Public Welfare
Manteno State Hospital - July 1, 1959 - June 30, 1960
Tranquilizing drug therapy continued in widespread
use. During the year a critical survey was made of patients
on this treatment to determine its effectiveness, and
considerable reduction resulted in the number of patients
on it. However, more patients became agitated when use
of drugs was discontinued and had to be returned to
them. To insure use of the most effective drugs, attempts
were made to evaluate various tranquilizing agents.
Progress toward the opening of more wards has been slow
and cautious. Three additional wards were opened this
year.
Pharmacy service was improved by the relocation of the
dispensing unit to the first floor of the Singer building.
The street lighting project of 1957 has been a valuable
to the security of the grounds and buildings as well
to the convenience of patients employees, and visitors.
Fifty-five Mercury Vapor street lights were installed
during the year bringing this project to near completion.
Aluminum signs were placed at street intersections directing
persons to the various buildings, which were also designated
by signs.
