Excerpts From Annual Reports of the Illinois Department
of Public Welfare
Manteno State Hospital - July 1, 1955 - June 30, 1956
Manteno State Hospital marked its 25th anniversary
on December 27, 1955, by honoring old-time employees,
four of whom had been on hand to greet the first patients
received. Beginning with only an administration building,
a power house, and a few cottages for patients and employees,
the institution has grown into a hospital-city of 104
buildings, approximately 8,000 patients, and more than
1,500 employees. It is the largest mental hospital in
Illinois and one of the largest in the world.
The Carriel Infirmary, newest building on the hospital
grounds, was opened on September 26, 1955. A one-story
construction, it accommodates 180 patients.
The research and investigative groups are now located
on Cottage Freud II. A program for approximately 90
patients was conducted throughout the year under direction
of Dr. Nathaniel Apter and Dr. Carl C. Pfeiffer. The
work included studies relating especially to schizophrenia
and epilepsy.
A patient drum corps was instituted. A Cinemascope movie
screen was procured for showings in the assemble hall,
and movies were shown also on the wards for those unable
to go to the hall.
The program of providing field training in social work
for University of Illinois students was continued.
