Nursing Department
The Nursing Staff has been depleted considerably by the demands of War conditions. At the present time we have 27 graduate nurses on our staff, including the administrative, supervisory, and general duty nurses, which is 18 less than at the same time a year ago.

Because of the rapid turnover in attendant employees the system of grading personnel as planned has been discontinued for the time being. The attendants' in-service training program continues, but because of the lack of a sufficient number of employees and because of the large number of new employees, it has been necessary to alter the course outline to meet practical needs of the Institution. The present course covers approximately twenty-four hours and is given to the employee before he is put on duty. This is followed up by supervision from the instructor on the ward. The emphasis is definitely being put on ward teaching rather than class room teaching.

Dietary Department
The patients in Freud cottage were transfered to Zeller, and Zeller dining room was used for the first time. Freud cottage was to be remodeled to a typhoid ward.
The dining room on White Cottage was closed when Prince was vacated. Since this was an old basement room where it was difficult to secure proper ventilation and cleanliness, it was an excellent step.

A number of the dining rooms were moved so that the patients would get exercise and fresh air walking to and from meals. Cullen, Drake, Willis, Adler, and Wiliams dining rooms were closed. Cullen patients ate at James dining room after the James patients were finished, Willis patients are at Todd cottage, Adler at Morgan and Drake patients at Dix cottage. The architect's office was moved from the north dining room in Dix cottage to make more room for the Drake patients. Williams patients were fed as third groups on James and Todd. As soon as vacancies occurred in other cottages the patients were transferred and these third groups were eliminated.*NOTE: Lobotomy took America and some other countries by storm. They were performed in a wide scale in the 40s, because the mental asylums were brimming over with cases after the Second World War. Between 1939 and 1951, more than 18,000 lobotomies were performed in the United States.
