This gallery is the result of over 2 years of photography at the former Manteno State Hospital. It is a small selection of images that I have chosen from over 1,000 photographs.

I may not see the place the same way that others do. Others may just see odd ruins scattered among houses and various businesses. I, however, see the remnants of human history begging not to be ignored, and forgotten architectural beauty built by human hands.

I feel that human elements are important and often ignored. Places like Manteno State Hospital didn't just appear on the landscape overnight only to crumble into a faded memory. Manteno State Hospital was built as a solution at a time when state run mental institutions were some of the only places for the care of the mentally ill, people with long term disabilities and the elderly. It was a self-contained kingdom, that grew its own food, supplied its own utilities and governed its own people. It was a place where both patients and employees lived, worked and played.

If these walls could talk, what stories they'd tell...
