The mural panels in documents 58 - 60 were completed and installed inside of the Administration Building at Manteno State Hospital on June 14, 1938.

The mural panels described in document 61 were most likely those proposed by *Gustaf Dahlstrom for "Singer" Diagnostic Building. These are mentioned in the "Complete Annual Report of the Illinois Department of Public Welfare" dated 1937-38 and written by Ralph T. Hinton as follows:

"Mr. Dahlstrom, while at the institution, presented preliminary sketches for the mural panels for the lobby of the Diagnostic Building which will be incorporated in another project similar to the one just completed in the Administration Building."

*The Manteno State Hospital reports spell Gustaf Oscar Dalstrom's name incorrectly with an "H". There are also other resources on the web that spell Gustaf with a "V" at the end. After finding the record of his death and his Social Security Number, it appears that the correct spelling of the artist's name is Gustaf Dalstrom.

At present, the whereabouts of the WPA murals that once graced the Administration Building are unknown and any information regarding them is greatly appreciated. If you have any information about what happened to them, where they are, what they looked like or photographs, please contact us!

Most recently, former employees have confirmed that there were murals in the lobby of the Singer Building, (document 61, above). Due to their hectic daily schedules however, they never had a moment to stop and consider them. Thus, a positive identification can not be made at this time.
